The Bagua map,
without the guesswork.

Understand the eight sectors, the center, and the practical difference between directional and entrance-based Bagua maps.

What is a Bagua map?

A Bagua map places the eight trigrams around a central area. It gives a spatial vocabulary to the trigrams and their associated qualities. The most common Chinese compass arrangement is the Later Heaven sequence with Li at the south and Kan at the north.

The map is a model, not a secret layer hidden inside a room. If a space is difficult to use because of poor light, noise, or access, symbolic mapping does not replace those practical issues.

These labels are popular in Western Feng Shui. They are useful as prompts, but they should not be treated as guaranteed outcomes.

Direction-based and entrance-based maps

A compass-based map uses real directions measured from the center of the property or room. An entrance-based overlay—often associated with the Black Hat Sect—places the sectors relative to the main entrance. These are different methods; mixing them without knowing which one you are using creates confusing advice.

In an apartment, use the building or apartment boundary consistently. Do not compare a compass map of one floor with a whole-building overlay from another.

A practical room-by-room approach

For each sector, begin with the practical purpose of the room. In a bedroom, sleep and rest matter more than adding symbolic objects. In a home office, desk ergonomics and light matter more than a direction label. In a living room, circulation and social comfort should set the priorities.

Choose one question per area. For example: “Does this place support focus?”, “Is the entry clear and safe?”, or “Is there room for the people who actually use this space?” Read the bedroom Bagua guide for a detailed example.

Common questions

Should the Bagua map start at the front door?

Some Western methods use the entrance, while classical compass-based systems use measured directions. Choose one system and state which method you are using.

Does a missing Bagua sector cause bad luck?

There is no reliable basis for treating an irregular floor plan as a cause of misfortune. Practical use, safety, and structural constraints should guide the room.
