Bagua vs BaZi:
what’s the difference?

Two related Chinese frameworks with different structures, inputs, and purposes—explained without blurring them into one system.

What the Bagua is

The Bagua is the set of Eight Trigrams built from yin and yang lines. The trigrams describe natural images and qualities, and can be arranged spatially or combined into hexagrams. A Life Gua calculator uses a simplified year-based application of this symbolism.

What BaZi is

BaZi, or Four Pillars of Destiny, uses a full birth date and time to form year, month, day, and hour pillars. These pillars are analyzed through heavenly stems, earthly branches, and the five elements. BaZi is not derived by simply replacing Eight Trigrams with another number.

Which one are you looking for?

If you want a simple personal trigram and traditional direction set, use the Life Gua calculator. If you want a full Four Pillars reading, seek a qualified BaZi practitioner and do not expect the Life Gua result to substitute for that work.

Neither system should be used as a medical, legal, or financial decision-making tool. Read more in Natal Bagua and Life Gua.

Common questions

Is Life Gua the same as BaZi?

No. Life Gua is a year-based personal trigram. BaZi uses four time pillars and a more extensive symbolic framework.

Can Bagua tell my future?

Bagua symbolism is used in divination traditions, but this website presents educational interpretation rather than guaranteed predictions.
