East group Kua numbers are 1, 3, 4, and 9. West group numbers are 2, 6, 7, and 8. They should appear as Life Gua results. It is not a separate number you select in the calculator.
| Group | Kua numbers | Trigrams |
|---|---|---|
| East group | 1, 3, 4, 9 | Kan, Zhen, Xun, Li |
| West group | 2, 6, 7, 8 | Kun, Qian, Dui, Gen |
The grouping summarizes which cardinal and intercardinal directions are traditionally considered favorable for each personal Kua. The precise label—success, wellbeing, relationships, or stability—also depends on the individual number.
Use the Life Gua library for each direction set. For example, Dui 7 has northwest as its success direction, while Kan 1 places success in the southeast.
Some modern sources use group membership to discuss relationship compatibility. That is a large leap from a direction table. Kua group does not measure communication, trust, shared values, or the health of a relationship.
If two people share a home, use the direction systems as optional design information. Negotiate around sleep, access, light, and each person’s actual needs before trying to satisfy a symbolic formula.
Practical design comes first. Keep exits clear, avoid placing a bed under an unsafe shelf, use appropriate lighting, and support the room’s main activity. Only then decide whether one traditional direction is worth considering.
If you do not know your number, use the Life Gua calculator or Kua number chart.
No. The groups organize favorable directions in one Feng Shui system. They are not evidence of relationship compatibility.
Common conventions map Kua 5 to Kun 2 or Gen 8. The resulting number determines the group in that method.
