Methodology
and sources.

The assumptions behind our guides and calculator, plus a starting bibliography for deeper study.

How we write about traditional systems

Baguapath separates cultural and historical description from claims of guaranteed outcomes. We aim to identify the method being used—such as a Later Heaven compass arrangement or a year-based Life Gua calculation—and to note where traditions differ.

References support historical, textual, and cultural context. Invoking a tradition does not turn a symbolic or divinatory claim into a scientific finding.

Calculator assumptions

The current calculator uses a common year-based Kua formula, a February 4 approximation for Li Chun, and maps Gua 5 to Kun 2 for male births and Gen 8 for female births. Births around the boundary may need a solar-term table or the convention specified by a teacher.

The calculator does not create a full BaZi chart, and its result should not be treated as a diagnosis or prediction.

Starting bibliography

  • I Ching / Yijing, primary classical text. See the Chinese Text Project’s Book of Changes.
  • Richard Wilhelm and Cary F. Baynes, The I Ching or Book of Changes, Princeton University Press. A widely used English translation with commentary.
  • Edward L. Shaughnessy, Unearthing the Changes: Recently Discovered Manuscripts of the Yi Jing (I Ching) and Related Texts, Columbia University Press.
  • Ole Bruun, Fengshui in China: Geomantic Divination between State Orthodoxy and Popular Religion, NIAS Press.
  • Eva Wong, Feng-Shui: The Ancient Wisdom of Harmonious Living, Shambhala.

This is a study list, not a claim that all sources agree on a single interpretation. For a particular lineage, consult its primary text and a qualified teacher.
