How to measure
a front door.

A precise method for compass direction, plus practical ways to make the entrance safer and more welcoming.

Facing direction and sitting direction

Stand at the front door facing outward. The compass bearing in front of you describes the door’s facing direction in many Feng Shui systems. The opposite bearing is sometimes called the sitting direction. Keep the two terms separate.

Measure consistently

  1. Use a compass away from metal doors and electronics when possible.
  2. Take more than one reading from the threshold.
  3. Record the bearing before converting it to one of the eight sectors.
  4. State whether you are mapping the door or the whole home.

Magnetic declination and phone sensors can introduce small differences. Record the method so comparisons remain meaningful.

What matters at the entrance

Clear lighting, safe steps, an unobstructed path, working locks, and a landing place for keys or deliveries improve an entrance without relying on a symbolic claim. The front door is important because it is a real threshold, not because it can predict opportunity.

Common questions

Should I face the door or stand with my back to it?

For the door’s facing direction, stand at the threshold and face outward. Document the convention you use so future readings remain consistent.
